Health Benefits to Working Locally

In honour of World Health Day, we are sharing some of the health benefits of working locally. World health day celebrates the formation of the world health organisation intending to highlight public health concerns. One thing the pandemic has made us realise is the unhealthy nature of the average commute, as we used to cram onto pack trains and bus’s for often lengthy commutes into the city centre. The pandemic has provided the rare opportunity to reset the way we work and commute, many people don’t want to get back to the way we used to work. Employees are been given more agency than ever to choose where and how they work, as flexible working becomes the norm. Opting to work locally provide people with the opportunity to have a healthier commute which will benefit their physical and mental health.


15 minute city

The 15-minute city is a concept whereby everything you need is accessible within 15 minutes of a walk or bike. The idea is that your home, leisure and work are accessible to you within 15 minutes, making for more sustainable and better for well-being as we are able to spend more time on the things we enjoy. Choosing to work local is a big part of this, allowing people to merely spend 15 minutes commuting changes our relationship with work. Big office spaces where we spend an hour commuting into dense city centres will slowly become a thing of the past as people realise working local has far more to offer them.

This provides you with the opportunity to get in some physical activity before and after work. Taking a daily walk has all kinds of proven health benefits from physical to mental.   2. Working locally will reduce the time you spend on your commute. The average commute is 59 minutes, which is equivalent to approximately 18 hours a month! Before the pandemic, we were commuting more than ever, spending hours a day travelling into offices.

    However, staying local allows you to claim back that time giving you the freedom to do more of the things you love. Whether that spend more time with family and friends or do that hobby you never have the time to do. It allows you to foster a better work-life balance which is far healthier for your mental health.

  3. Become part of a smaller local community. Local offices and desks spaces offer a smaller community to join, making your work experience more personalised. You will be able to meet and work with other people who are local whilst supporting local businesses and the economy.
