Dreaming In Colour

The most important tool the artist fashions through constant practice is faith in the ability to produce miracles – Mark Rothko

Hotel Elephant Gallery is pleased to present their first show exclusively dedicated to the paintings of the artist Marcia Scott, graduate of St Martin’s, who has recently shown in New York at Berry Campbell and who lives and works in Southwark.

In her abstract paintings Scott explores the versatility of gloss enamel paint, to create vibrant and dynamic works that have been likened to musical scores in their interplay between pigment and texture. The saturated backgrounds are prepared with pure colour and then worked on in a process-based technique of pouring and dripping to create flowing shapes reflective of her tutelage under her step-father Frank Bowling. Scott declares her subject to be creativity itself; being alive, connecting with the spiritual, and thereby embarks on action painting; volatile, intense and libidinous.

For Scott, her paintings are like prayers; a show of faith in the sacred, in which she anoints her paintings with materials as diverse as olive oil and whisky. She feels her paintings can bring change in the world; building an order based on creativity, community and love. Scott champions abstraction as a medium of liberation; releasing the individual from external controls.

Having recently had shows in New York and Louisiana, the exhibition includes three paintings from the University of Louisiana’s solo show ‘We Are All Related’. The exhibition also includes canvases of varying sizes, the largest being ‘Blue Dragon,’ an unseen painting at 14 foot wide. Each individual piece demonstrates the artist’s distinctive visual approach, in which the viewer is invited to explore the build up of glossy, sensuous surfaces.
